Are these the most annoying things ever? Things i hate in a Video Game.

Hello Space Cowboys!

As many of you know, i have a huge passion for video games.Since when i was a kid, i had lot of fun with video games, you can explore new worlds and you can escape from reality for some hours.

But sometimes there are some aspects in a video game that makes me want to quit it and sell it (Am i too dramatic? :V )

Maybe it is something small and insignificant, but for you it is still pretty annoying. That’s why i wanted to share with you guys the things that i hate most in a video game! If you want, you can share what you hate too with a comment, so we can have some discussions! Maybe it is something small, or something terrible, but i hope to see your opinions about it!

The guy in the header is James Rolfe aka The Angry Video Game nerd, you can find him on youtube here: Cinemassacre

Unskippable Cutscenes.

“Did i ever tell you what the definition of insanity is? Insanity is watching the same cutscene over and over again.”

Guys. Who doesn’t hate that? Unskippable cutscenes are some of the worst annoying things that you can find in a video game. They are useless, you don’t need it, and they are just here to destroy your nerves.

Why in the world you don’t add a button to skip them? I’m not saying that i hate the plot of a video game, because i read and watch everything, but after i watch it one time i don’t want to watch it again. Or at least give me the power to skip it or not.

Imagine if you have a tough boss fight, it is your first time fighting him, but before the boss, there is a long cutscene ahead. After the cutscene, you’re finally free to fight him, but he destroys you in a minute. So you’re here, all angry and ready to kick his ass  but..you have to watch the clip again. You have to watch the entire clip, and maybe you’re not even sure if you beat the boss, if you die again, you have to watch it again. Such a stupid thing breaks your gameplay in half.

And what if you have finished a game and you want to start it for the second time? Maybe because you want to challenge your skills  with an higher difficulty, or maybe  because you just want to have some fun. You have to watch all the intro again. And yes, i’m talking to you Far cry.You have both the long intro at the start, and also all the cutscenes that you can’t skip. That’s what insanity is for me.

Stupid Achievements.

I love the sensation after you beat  a game with all the achievements unlocked. You have finished all the hard challenges, all for the holy glory. But wait, not all the achievements are hard, because they are hard. Some achievements are hard, because they are stupid.

What do i mean by “stupid”? Well, read what happened to me during this days.

I was playing Penarium, such a funny and awesome indie game that i think i’m gonna review soon! Anyway, the game really gets me, so i wanted to complete it with a nice 100% completion.

But with some gifs, i think you can understand me better:

I’ve finished the hardest achievement, destroying 150 barrels in arcade mode!

YAYYY

But.. i forgot that i needed one more achievement to complete the game.Something terrible was ready to surprise me.

Way.Jizaz.

Seriously devs? I had to keep dying like an idiot, over and over again, because i’ve finished the game with less deaths. So instead of making an achievement like, i don’t know, “finish the game with less than 500 deaths”, they force you to die for a 100%.

I had to die for MINUTES to unlock this,  but finally..

I had a confused reaction because i was REALLY happy for beating this game, but at the same time, i was really mad with this achievement.

Achievements should add more challenges to the game, should encourage the player to beat it more times or doing some hard tasks, but it really shouldn’t encourage  the players to cheat. If you have a look at the Penarium forum, lot of people were looking for 100% save states or “had” to cheat to get it. I’m against cheats, but this particular achievement  deserved it, in my opinion.

Let the player do the same thing for lot of times, isn’t a demostration of skills, but a demostration of patience, because it’s a stressfull thing that isn’t funny at all and even challenging for the player. That’s why, at least for me, achievements should be more like particular”tasks” for example, the break 150 barrels was tough but also fun to get. This one wasn’t.

Unbreakable objects.

Ok ladies and gentlemen. For now, we had some interesting and annoying picks, but you can’t beat this one. Unbreakable objects.

How many times this happened to you? Imagine if you’re full immersed in this new video game, you’ve almost forgot that you’re inside it , but then you use your giant sword to break a plate, but it doesn’t break.

It is something a bit stupid and it could be also insignificant for some people, but i really care about that, for example, in Skyrim you can’t break any objects, and such a little thing ruins your experience!Because you don’t find it realistic, you really wanted to smash that plate. You can dominate dragons,  slay all the bandits, destroy an ice troll, but can’t break a simple plate.

Of course not all games are like that! Lot of games gives you the freedom to smash what you want or at least, objects that should  be breakable, like a plate. For example i love Battlefield for this because you can even destroy walls to surprise your enemy. Or maybe in Red Faction or the lego games, where you can literally destroy everything you want.

Walking with a character slower than you.

assassins-creed-iv-talking-to-vane_jpg.jpg

Ok, for now, this is the last one of the list, but doesn’t mean that isn’t annoying too!

How many times in video games, a character invite you to talk, while doing a slow walk?Well, he isn’t slow because he walk like a normal person, the problem is that you’re too fast for him. So you are FORCED  to walk really slowly to stay with him and it’s something so  boring to do. I prefer if you just stop me and talk with me instead of this.

The perfect example is Assassin’s creed. Everytime a character invite you for a walk, to explain you some plot segments, you’re forced to walk with him and you have to struggle to match his speed. This is something that i really can’t stand in a game, it isn’t only boring to do but also useless, if you want to do something like that, just stop me or talk with a cutscene.Like normal game does.

And the post is over! Thank you for reading this.

Of course like i said at the start of the post, these are my personal picks, so for some of you maybe they’aren’t even annoying problems. If you know other things that annoys you, feel free to share them in the comment section! Maybe we can share some opinions together! Also, i like every game i mentioned (except the last assassin’s creed games) even if they have some irritating problems.

Instead, i want to talk about another thing too. During this days i’ve mentioned on Twitter that i was writing a post about Postal 2 jokes and easter eggs before Easter! The problem is that i had like a bug and WordPress deleted everything. So i’ve lost the entire post. Everything i’ve  writed was gone. I don’t know if i’m gonna have the will to write it all again but soon or late, i’m gonna publish it.

  1. I’m not a fan of achievements these day, most are unsatisfying and simply there to tick a box. I like ones that make you try something a little different, but for the most part they’re story related or “kill 7 million of these”.

  2. This was a refreshing read. One of my biggest pet peeves is allies in shooting games who can’t hit anything. Drives me nuts that I’m in a firefight against 15 dudes and my teammates in the campaign are practically firing blanks. The unskippable cut scenes is horrendous. Though I did enjoy Far Cry 3’s insanity monologue. Helped build the evilness of Vaas

    1. Thank you, i’m glad you liked! I loved Far Cry 3 too, also the insanity monologue was pretty cool. But after i finish it one time, i don’t want to hear the same monologue over again without the ability to skip it.

Also, the allies in shooting games is an awesome pick! I really hate them too, they always need your help and they are useless. They are more annoying than helpful!

  3. When it comes to ‘stupid achievements,’ I think some devs do it on purpose. In Don’t Starve’s PS4 version, there is an incredibly hard trophy where you have to make an item that does nothing. I’m pretty sure it’s a jab at the uselessness of achievements.

    1. First of all thanks for reading!

I totally agree with everything you said, sometimes looks like devs just want to making fun of the poor player with this kind of challenges, they makes you feel like an idiot.

      1. Well, sometimes you got to have some sympathy for the devs too. They probably work for hours on end, only to be told later that they need to add achievements to their game as well. If I were a dev, I’d probably have some fun at the expense of my audience, too.

      2. I agree with that too, it’s a pain in the ass for the player having achievements like that, but could be also fun for a developer! Like you said, i’d probably do the same thing too if i had the pleasure.

  4. The story about the 1000 deaths made me laugh! For me it’s escort missions, which ties in with your point about slow walking. I can’t stand them, it’s like they’re filling time to make the game seem longer sometimes.

    1. Thank you! I’m glad you liked that piece!

I HATE escort missions too.A long time ago i’ve played Dragon’s Dogma, that i really loved, but there were a lot of this escort missions that i really hated. Specially because if the character you escort dies, he will disappear forever from the game, so maybe the character do some stupid thing and you can’t do nothing to stop him.

  5. I’m with you on the achievements thing. As you say, it’s a demonstration of pace, rather than ability in the game!

The other thing I don’t like about achievements, in Steam and on PS3 (though I found out you can turn these off) – notification. I hate playing a game, and being reminded I’m playing a game like Shadow of the Colossus or something else really immersive, when an icon pops-up and tells you that you’ve killed a boss. I know – I just saw myself do it!

    1. It happened to me too! And sometimes they can also gives you some trouble during your gameplay. For example in the xbox the achievement pop up below the screen, so if you play a game while doing that, the achievement that pops up will block your visual!

  6. Unskippable cutscenes are the worst! Especially when you die and then you have to go through the whole thing again WHY!!!!!!!
